Tanuki Games- Austin, Texas
Austin, Texas- Tanuki Games is a game store set apart from nearly every other game store due to Chris, the store’s owner. The first thing I noticed when walking into Tanuki Games was the wide selection of foreign games- specifically Japanese. Saashi is truly a great designer with games like ‘Let’s Make A Bus Route’ and ‘Wind the Film!’ And Tanuki has both with many other publishers and designers represented. What’s more is that the store is located in an Asian shopping area and it was so great to pick up a Japanese game and have the option to then get sushi, onigiri, or other great Asian delicacies. Tanuki also has a great selection of games just like any other great game store.
Conclusion/ Grading
Selection (A+)- Tanuki Games has a great selection from foreign games to modern classics. Additionally, there is a great selection of miniature games such as Marvel Champions and Star Wars Armada. No singles in the TCG area but plenty of packs and a variety of RPG books and resources.
Layout (B)- Tanuki Games is a large store and it feels like it. The overall flow of the store does not direct a customer and thus, unless you know what you are looking for, you could get overwhelmed by selection and turn away without purchasing anything. Admittedly, I walked out without understanding Chris’ amazing selection of Japanese games mostly because there wasn’t much information on what the games were/ why its so awesome that he is one of the only stores in the country with such a selection. This store has so much potential if a little more signage/ organization was added. I am going to write a separate post on my suggested store layout to maximize sales and flow for customers.
Location (A)- As mentioned in the intro, the shopping area is amazing and has plenty of food and parking for a day out. My only concern is that it is too far from a large demographic, the University of Texas. If the store was closer to campus or at least close enough to walk from a large student area, it would probably see an uptick in games.
